Meeting Announcement - The next meeting of the FCIA will take place October 13-15, 1999 in Atlanta (Buckhead area) GA. Member Renee Woodruff has helped locate excellent accomodations at the Embassy Suites, Buckhead. This is our 3rd meeting in 1999. The FCIA will revert to one or two meetings per year with separate committee meetings in the next two years. The board of directors felt it necessary to meet frequently during 1999, the critical startup phase of FCIA. FCIA in the news - FCIA Acting Executive Director has had two articles published recently in the National Insulation Association (NIA) OUTLOOK Magazine, June Issue. The articles can be viewed on the FCIA Website, WWW.FCIA.ORG. The articles discuss the needs for a Professional Firestop Contractor and an Industry Viewpoint. FCIA has been working with NIA, Associated Walls and Ceilings Industries (AWCI), Society of Fire Protection Engineers, (SFPE) and other associations to further Firestop Systems Installation Professionalism and Life Safety in buildings.
Membership - The FCIA is growing fast. From an original cast of 7 firms, the association currently has 32 members. Our goal is to have 50 member firms by the October FCIA Meeting in Atlanta, GA.

FCIA Committees on the move - FCIA Committees are working hard to establish FCIA as the industry leader for Firestop Systems Life Safety:
Accreditation Committee - Blase Reardon, (A.F. Underhill, Inc.) Chair, and the acting Executive Director, drafted a request for proposal for contractor accreditation and ongoing audit of Firestop Contractors. The letters were sent to Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Factory Mutual (FM), Building Products Consortium (BPC) and the International Firestop Council (IFC). Interest in the program is strong as UL, FM and BPC have already responded that they will provide a proposal to the committee by September, 99.
Communications Committee - Aedan Gleeson, (GPI Firestop), Chair, The FCIA Website went online July 15, 1999. Check the site out at WWW.FCIA.ORG. The committee developed an industry leading site with membership listings, resource information, a chat room and membership application. Committee chair, Aedan Gleeson and the committee's stated goal is, "FCIA and our website should be the "Hub of the World for Firestopping". Articles pertinent to firestop systems are welcome. If you've written an article, viewpoint or opinion, send it via email or fax to the FCIA Office for electronic entry to our website.
Technical Committee - Kathy Taraba, (1 Source Firestop) Chair, in Denver, is Meeting in August to assemble the "Firestop Manual of Practice". Each committee member agreed to research certain topics to insert into a tabbed binder. "This is an industry first for Firestopping as nothing exists now. Our committee is forging new ground as The Firestop Industry Information Source", states Kathy.
Liaison Committee - Breck Spain, (Performance Contracting) chair, - "This is the last committee to see action" according to Breck. Once the Accreditation Program, Technical Documents are assemble, the Liaison Committee swings into action. FCIA Speaking engagements - FCIA speaking programs continue to be in demand. The Acting Executive Director was a feature speaker for the Society of Fire Protection Engineers June Program, and worked with Technical Committee Chair, Kathy Taraba at the Associated Walls andCielings Industries (AWCI) National Convention, Washington DC. in April. FCIA will speak to AWCI, Honolulu, August 26, 1999 and be part of NIA Roundtable, April, 10.

FCIA May Meeting a Success! - The FCIA met May 13-15, 1999 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Hotel for it's second meeting. Industry leading speakers filled Thursdays program tight with information from Rich Walke; Underwriters Laboratories, Mike Thornton, GREENHECK Inc., a Fire Damper manufacturer; Chas Magdanz, an architect who presented a matrix for system selection; and a roundtable discussion with architect (Chas), Kelly Reynolds, Code official Consultant, and Jim Hagen, Fireproof Coatings, Inc. sitting in quite effectively for "the missing General Contractor".
Friday programs included FCIA Goals review, committee meetings and presentations and the first FCIA Golf Outing. Winners of the tourney were those with the best golf story. What was it about that fire put out by Jim Hagen and crew?
Most important, FCIA Contractors from around the country have come together to form relationships that result in improved life safety in buildings due to firestop systems installations. The FCIA Contractors have put much work into FCIA which will result in a better educated contractor, manufacturer, code official, insurance company and architect.
