Hello Program Participants,
Your Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) certification period expires April 26, 2009. As you are aware, maintaining a certified DRI is a requirement for contractor eligibility in the UL Qualified Firestop Contractor Program.
You may renew your certification by either of the following methods:
- obtaining six (6) continuing education units, or
- by re-examination of the DRI exam with a successful score of 80% or better
For those who wish to take the DRI examination, you may register for the exam at the UL University website or complete the examination at an FCIA conference. Examination fees are $450. Available dates for the examination are:

For those renewing your certification by continuing education units (CEU's), please complete the attached renewal application, provide supporting documentation, and include renewal fees ($150) and fax or mail to the UL University address indicated on the application form. The application and supporting information will be reviewed by UL University staff. Results of our review of your application and a new DRI Certificate (if applicable) will be mailed to you within 30 calendar days after receipt of the application. A minimum of six (6) CEU's are required for recertification. One (1) CEU is equal to 10 contact hours of participation in organized industry related continued education. You may obtain CEU's in any of the following methods:
- industry related continuing education programs (all 6 CEU's may be obtained through this method)
- conducting industry related presentations or training programs (a maximum of 2 CEU's)
- on the job experience for new work tasks (a maximum of 1 CEU)
- development of ten (10) industry related test questions (a maximum of 1 CEU)
- professional membership with an industry related organization (a maximum of 1 CEU)
In the event that DRI recertification is not completed prior to the current certification expiration date or the DRI is no longer employed by the contractor, a listed Qualified Firestop Contractor must carry out the following to remain in the program:
- Immediately notify UL.
- Immediately initiate the Contingency Plan for continued compliance with Program Requirements.
- Employ or qualify a replacement DRI within 120 days.
